
Fat Face ‘NIGHT AIR’ World Freestyle Championships / Round 3 All Terrain Boarding Association (ATBA) UK Championships, July 21 – 23, 2006 @ South West Mountain Board Centre (SWMBC), N. Devon.
On 21-23 July 2006, SWMBC will be hosting a veritable festival of all terrain boarding (ATB) at their N. Devon site and invite one and all to watch, try-out or compete.
For those unfamiliar with this new extreme all terrain sport, it’s a cross between snowboarding, surfing and skateboarding on any solid surface where gravity’s pull is positive!
Spread over three days, two events will take place:
The FAT FACE ‘Night Air’ World Freestyle Championships
will feature 20+ invited international riders taking on the UK’s best
over some of the biggest and most spectacular freestyle terrain in the ATB
world. New features are currently being developed, adding to the massive 35ft
and 25ft table top ramps that were used in last years ground-breaking event.
Additional competitor places will be open for qualification on Friday night,
whist the main event will run Saturday evening, leading to the finals as night
falls and the floodlights come on.
Riders will be flying in from as far afield as Russia, Japan, NZ, Australia,
S. America, Europe and the US. Whilst the South West’s local riders
Tom Kirkman (last years winner), Alex Downie (3), Ig Wilkinson (5) and Richie
Heard (9) will be hoping to repeat their performances of last year and take
home a share of the £1000 prise money and the title of World Champion.
The ATBAUK Championships will feature two competitions open to all riders.
On Saturday day time, four person BOARDER X racing, where competitors have
timed runs down multiple-featured race course, fast, furious and exhilarating
to watch. Rider’s results will also count towards their World Series
ranking.
On Sunday, a SLOPESTYLE event will showcase freestyle riding over varied features,
including jumps and rails.
Typical turnout sees 200+riders, male and female, from as young as 8 years
old right through to the Veterans class with a varied skills base, from first
time competitors, to seasoned pros from around the world.
Camping is available onsite with toilets, a shower and various food retailers for those wishing to witness the spectacle of the whole weekend, or with free entry to spectators on Saturday night, FAT FACE’s ‘Night Air’ extravaganza promises a perfect evenings entertainment…..bring the kids and a picnic and prepare to be amazed. Spectators can even enjoy the thrills of the sport in the try out area, under the watchful eyes of fully qualified instructors, so no excuses….have a go!!
Last years ‘Night Air’ event has been hailed by some as ‘the greatest ATB event the world has ever seen.’ Spectators, organisers, riders and sponsors alike were all treated to a beautiful sunset evenings entertainment capped with an awesome fireworks display. With the addition this year of the ATBA round of the UK Champs, spectators are in for a real treat with riders from 10 countries competing for ranking points and cash prises.
