FAIRFAX Park's biggest crowd for two seasons, 440, saw Town make a disappointing cup exit against the Toolstation League champions on Tuesday night A prize of £2,250 and an attractive home draw against Newport County awaited the winners, but Town never quite produced the form that had won them the replay deservedly.

Their main tormentor was ex-Town striker Shane Kingston. He created the first goal for Mike Southgate and scored the second right on the stroke of full time.

The first half was evenly matched, with few chances at either end. Bideford put in the first telling attack, seeing a Darren Hawkins shot fly over the bar following a free kick.

As both teams strove to control the game there was a series of free kicks, from one of which Ben Kirk was shown a yellow card, following a foul on Robert Gough. Town finished the first half pressing hard and Kirk let fly, hoping for one of his specials, but the ball went well wide. Ryan King saw his shot from the edge of the box well saved by Kenny Griffiths and, from the resulting corner, only frantic Bideford defending kept the scoresheet blank.

The home side started the second half as they had finished the first. King fired a low centre across the goalmouth that just evaded Matt Shaxton. Soon afterwards, King showed great skill as he turned his marker inside out and passed the ball inside but the resulting shot was charged down.

Bideford took the lead on 70 minutes. A speedy marauding run by Kingston ended with a pass to Southgate, who appeared to have too much room and wasable to pick his spot.

Bridgwater now began to lose their composure and were drawn into a series of fouls that resulted in several yellow cards, although one handed to Dan Forward was totally unwarranted.

The home managers sent on fresh legs to try and get back in the game, Aaron Deeks replacing Lee Nunn and Kevin Chorley going on for Steve Sokol. The closest they came to forcing extra time was a Mike Mackay shot that was well saved and a Dan Forward header following a corner that flew up in the air instead of into the net.

The last action of the game belonged to Bideford and Kingston. He won possession from an overstretched defence before planting the ball in the net. There was hardly time to kick off before referee Lee Swabey, who had another excellent game, signalled the end.

FA Cup, 1st qual round: Bideford 2, Bridgwater Town 2

Bridgwater twice took the lead at Bideford on Saturday in this pulsating encounter, which was a great advertisement for Western League football.

Two superb strikes from Bridgwater captain Ben Kirk had Town looking at the £2,000-plus prize-money, only to see the league champions twice claw their way back for a replay at Fairfax Park on Tuesday (7.45pm).

The winners will be at home to Newport County in the next round.
