Welcome to The Mount at Bideford. This interesting Georgian building is full of character and charm. It is set in a private semi-walled garden with large and handsome trees, making it a peaceful haven so close to Bideford town centre in the heart of North Devon.
All eight bedrooms have been tastefully decorated and furnished. They are all en suite and equipped with colour televisions, radios and hair dryers and many other essentials. A recent addition is a ground floor bedroom which is a particular advantage for those guests to whom stairs are a problem and need wheel chair access.
Set within its own grounds, with ample car parking, The Mount is a five minute walk to the town centre of Bideford.
During their period of ownership Heather and Andrew have lavished much care and expense in maintaining the property to a high standard. This is evident throughout, whether from the beautiful hallway which greets guests on arrival; the restful lounge with its grand piano and well stocked library; the dining room with Venetian pictures and antique furniture; or from the individually decorated bedrooms.
In the 16th century Bideford was Britain's third largest port. It is rumoured that Sir Walter Raleigh landed his first shipment of tobacco there. Today the narrow town centre streets lead down to a tree-lined quay, which bustles with fishing vessels, cargo and pleasure boats.
This area of North Devon was home to the author Charles Kingsley, and is where he based his novel Westward Ho!. A small seaside town, named after the book, was built after the book's publication. Westward Ho!, which is the only town in the United Kingdom that officially contains an exclamation mark in its name, is approximately 5 kilometres (3 miles) from Bideford.
