Appledore Lifeboat
The Appledore Lifeboat station, an RNLI funded Lifeboat station, situated in Appledore, is a small and bustling fishing village at the mouth of the rivers Taw and Torridge
The Appledore Bar is reputed to be the second most dangerous Bar in the British Isles. In the early 1800's, before the Lifeboat Station was established, the men of Appledore were involved in many brave rescues. The Oarsmen manning the Pilot Gigs carried out this heroic work. These Gigs were pulled by 6, 8 or even 10 Oars, and were very lightly built, fast, and manoeuvrable. The station has been in existence since 1824 in that time there have been 27 Lifeboats, 3 crewmen have been lost, 790 lives have been saved and 33 medals for bravery awarded.
